AB de Villiers to Gambhir: Keep India's Young Stars Grounded
Former South African star AB de Villiers has a warning for Team India. After India lost back-to-back T20 series on its recent UK tour, de Villiers said the team's young batting stars need to stay grounded — or Indian cricket could run into trouble.
He shared his views on his YouTube channel, speaking about players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma.
"Talent Alone Isn't Enough"
De Villiers said India has no shortage of gifted young batters. But he was clear that talent by itself doesn't guarantee success at the international level.
"These are batters with rare talent," de Villiers said. "But talent alone isn't enough to succeed in international cricket for a long time. You also need discipline, mental toughness, and the right guidance."
He added a caution about how young players are treated in the media and by fans: don't overpraise a young player too soon. He should still be seen as someone who is learning.
IPL Success Doesn't Always Translate
De Villiers also pointed to a bigger difference between IPL cricket and international cricket. Players who score heavily in the IPL, he said, can get a reality check when they step onto the international stage.
"This is international cricket," he said. "There's no room to hide your weaknesses here. In the IPL, there are usually one or two bowlers you feel confident scoring off. In international cricket, there's no hiding place like that. You need more than one or two gears — you can't always bat in fifth gear."
Why This Matters Right Now
India lost consecutive T20 series during its recent UK tour, which is what prompted de Villiers' comments. His message is straightforward: the raw talent in India's current young batting lineup is real, but turning that talent into long-term international success will need more than big IPL numbers — it will take discipline, adaptability, and patient handling by the team management.
