Sensex, Nifty Open Higher on July 16 as IT Stocks Recover

India's stock market opened in the green on Thursday, July 16. IT sector stocks led the recovery after facing selling pressure for the past two days.

Why IT Stocks Are Bouncing Back

IT stocks fell under selling pressure over the last two trading sessions. But investors are now showing renewed interest in the sector, mainly for two reasons:

  • Attractive valuations — after the recent fall, many IT stocks look cheaper to investors
  • June quarter results — companies are releasing their Q1 (April-June) earnings, and investors are watching closely

Gains in US futures also added to the positive mood in Indian markets this morning.

Sensex and Nifty: The Numbers So Far

The Sensex closed the previous session at 77,185. On Thursday morning, it opened around 200 points higher and held steady from there.

As of 9:45 AM, the Sensex was trading at 77,409, up 224 points.

The Nifty followed the same trend, trading at 24,131, up 52 points.

The rupee stood at 96.30 against the US dollar.

Not Every Sector Is Up

While the overall market moved higher, banking stocks were an exception:

  • Bank Nifty was down 76 points
  • Nifty Midcap index was down 138 points

Stocks Leading the Gains

These stocks were among the top gainers on the Sensex and Nifty:

  • Dixon Technologies
  • SRF
  • Hindustan Petroleum (Hind Petro)
  • BPCL
  • Kaynes Technology

Stocks Under Pressure

These stocks were trading lower:

  • ICICI Lombard
  • HDFC AMC
  • ICICI Prudential
  • PB Fintech
  • GE Vernova T&D India

What This Means for Investors

The morning's gains were driven mainly by IT stocks finding buyers again after two rough sessions, along with positive cues from US markets. Banking stocks, however, didn't join the rally, with both Bank Nifty and the midcap index trading lower.
